Remembering the Islamic Clerical Tradition Behind the History of Gonjaland By Alhassan Abdul-Rauf Email: rauf2b@gmail.com The history of the Savannah Region of Ghana cannot be fully told without acknowledging the longstanding relationship between the Gonja Kingdom and the Kamara Muslim clerical family, whose members, according to oral traditions, accompanied, supported and served the Gonja state from its earliest beginnings. The establishment of the Gonja Kingdom under Ndewura Jakpa was not merely a story of military conquest, territorial expansion and political authority. It was also a history shaped by religion, spirituality and the presence of Muslim scholars who played important roles within the emerging Gonja state. According to oral traditions preserved within parts of Gonjaland, Muslim clerics associated with the Kamara family accompanied Ndewura Jakpa during his campaigns and provided Islamic prayers, spiritual guidance and religious services.
